Good Green: the right tree, shrub or plant at the right place
Choosing the right trees, shrubs or perennials is not an easy task. Factors such as type of management, desired lifespan, and manager’s expectation of a particular green area determine which plants are best planted where. Applied Plant Research (PPO) has available the knowledge for choosing and maintaining the right type of green.
The right green at the right place. This is what is all about. There are many types of plants, trees and shrubs but not each type is suitable for each location. One species is doing better on a particular soil type whereas the other develops better on a different soil.
Different requirements for green
Each council and each green manager is laying down different requirements to be met by parks and gardens. Certain councils wish a long-lasting plantation with a high decorative value and little maintenance. Others wish plants and trees to reduce air pollution or to reduce fine dust in the air. Or they wish to restrict noise pollution or catch extreme amounts of precipitation.
The scientists of PPO have all this information. They know which trees and shrubs are meeting the requirements of the green managers, where different species are doing well, and where they are not. And they are also keeping record of the maintenance required by different species.
Knowledge on internet site
All this knowledge can be found on internet (http://www.ppo.wur.nl/NL/onderzoek/onderzoeksthemas/Groene+Ruimte/goedgroen/).
And the scientists are also regularly organising meetings with, e.g., council representatives, during which council officials and scientists are exchanging information.
