IMARES Fulmar research in UNEP Yearbook 2011

The IMARES long term research into plastic debris in stomachs of Fulmars from the North Sea has been given a prominent place in a chapter on the problem of marine plastic pollution in the UNEP Yearbook.

The chapter ‘Plastic Debris in the Ocean’ in the Yearbook 2011 of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) shows that the problem of marine plastic litter is getting proper attention on the international political agenda. The Fulmar research from the North Sea contributes to that progress. It is of course important that scientists and policy makers are dealing with these issues. But they would be empty handed without the strong commitment and efforts of the many volunteers that survey coastlines and collect beached birds for research. This chapter in the UNEP Yearbook is a special compliment to them!
