InteSusAl: algae for biofuel

Algae are one of the most promising sources of biofuels, with high yields and lower greenhouse gases than traditional fuels. Wageningen UR Food & Biobased Research participates in the EU-project InteSusal, in which via an integrated approach biofuels from algae in a sustainable manner on an industrial scale are generated.

In the project the production of algae from both heterotrophic and phototrophic routes will be optimized to achieve the algae cultivation targets of 90-120 dry tonnes per hectare by annum. Food & Biobased Research focuses on the yield optimization of the algae and to investigate the recycling of the algae growth medium.

The project will select algae species and cultivation technologies to attain algal oil with a suitable lipid profile for biodiesel production and will validate this selection through conversion of the extracted oil into biodiesel to meet standard specifications. The sustainability of this demonstration, in terms of both economic and environmental (closed carbon loop) implications will be considered across the whole process; including optimum use of algal biomass resources to enable commercialisation.

The project is part of the European Algae Cluster projects. The three projects of this cluster are co-funded by DG Energy of the European Commission for an optimized use of algae.
