Meet our course leader: Prof. Dr. Ricardo Da Silva Torres

With a background rooted in computer engineering, visual computing, and machine learning, Professor Ricardo da Silva Torres brings decades of AI expertise to one of the most urgent and exciting frontiers of today: agriculture. As the course leader of the Summer School on Intelligent Agriculture, he invites learners to explore how artificial intelligence can revolutionise food systems, improve sustainability, and support scientific breakthroughs.

From Code to Crops: How AI is Shaping the Future of Agriculture
Professor Torres joined Wageningen University & Research (WUR) after holding professorships in Brazil and Norway. His career has spanned over 200 publications, countless international collaborations, and leadership in multidisciplinary research projects. What drew him to WUR was the opportunity to combine cutting-edge AI with real-world impact.

At Wageningen, we’re not developing AI for AI’s sake, we’re applying it to solve real problems in food, farming, and the environment.

WUR’s interdisciplinary approach, world-class research facilities, and commitment to sustainability make it an ideal place for innovation. Its strong global network and collaboration with industry experts allow researchers to translate knowledge into real-world solutions.

Wageningen offers a unique ecosystem where domain expertise meets technology. That synergy allows us to build truly use-inspired AI.

A Course at the Crossroads of Technology and Sustainability
The Summer School on Intelligent Agriculture is more than a technical training, it’s a gateway to the future of food and farming. The course is designed for students and professionals who want to get hands-on with AI while working on actual agricultural datasets from the WUR domain.

Participants explore how AI techniques like machine learning and data visualisation can be applied to areas such as crop monitoring, soil health, and yield prediction. The course fosters interdisciplinary collaboration between AI specialists and agricultural researchers: a combination WUR is uniquely positioned to offer.

We make AI practical. Students don’t just learn theory, they work with real data and tools to understand the challenges and opportunities of digital agriculture.

Why Wageningen?
For Professor Torres, Wageningen is the ideal place to lead this kind of course. The university’s global reputation in life sciences, combined with a deep understanding of food systems, makes it a fertile ground for innovation in intelligent agriculture. “WUR gives me the freedom to build a research and teaching agenda that tackles the biggest challenges of our time, from food security to climate change.”
