OSPAR Ministers conference in Norway
OSPAR Ministers impressed by plastic in fulmar stomach.
The ministers of the OSPAR countries met 23-24 September 2010 in Bergen in Norway to discuss environmental agreements for the north-eastern Atlantic Ocean.
On Friday 24 Sep, the ministerial conference hall was temporarily shaped into an IMARES laboratory for the autopsy of a Northern Fulmar. At the event, Jan Andries van Franeker of IMARES investigated the stomach contents. The Norwegian Minister of Environment Erik Solheim and his OSPAR colleagues thus personally witnessed the quantity of plastic litter that may accumulate in such a seabird stomach.
Within the North Sea, OSPAR already uses Northern Fulmars to monitor the ecological damage from marine litter.
