The molecular link between mitochondrial dysfunction and intestinal permeability

Integrate results from research papers to create a literature overview that describes the signalling pathways involved in both processes.

Background: The main function of mitochondria is to produce cellular energy, but they also fulfil other functions such as cellular signalling. It has been shown that energy depletion leads to increased intestinal permeability. This provides a link between mitochondrial (dys)function and intestinal permeability.

Questions: Which signalling pathways are affected by mitochondrial dysfunction? Are these pathways involved in maintaining intestinal permeability (i.e. cellular differentiation, tight junctions)?

Aim: Integrate results from research papers to create a literature overview that describes the signalling pathways involved in both processes. The aim is to go into depth by describing molecular pathways or the involvement of specific protein(s).
