Project
PlantLIBRA: positieve effecten en risico’s van plantaardige voedingssupplementen
The use of plants and plants derivatives to maintain health has been the popular choice throughout Europe for many centuries. The consumption of teas, digestive drinks, juices, elixirs and extracts prepared from botanicals and used for health maintenance purposes has become part of European cultural heritage. Plant food supplements are a modern-day extension of this process. PlantLIBRA (PLANT food supplements: Levels of Intake, Benefit and Risk Assessment) aims to foster the safe use of food supplements containing plants or botanical preparations, by increasing science-based decision-making by regulators and food chain operators.
PlantLIBRA is a project co-financed in the context of the 7th EU Framework Program. The project aims to foster the safe use of food supplements containing plants or botanical preparations, by increasing science-based decision-making by regulators and food chain operators.
PlantLIBRA is structured to develop, validate and disseminate data and methodologies for risk and benefit assessment and implement sustainable international cooperation. International cooperation is necessary to ensure the quality of the plants imported in the EU.
Objectives
Supporting science-based decision-making and safe use of plant food supplements are the driving aims of PlantLIBRA. They are the shared, long-standing goals of all partners. As fruitful EC-projects are closely aligned with policy, major regulatory bodies, and stakeholders.
The project will directly achieve, within the four years of length, objectives related to:
- A Meta-database containing PFS consumption data, biologically active substances and contaminants available.
- An accessible risk, benefit and risk-benefit models platform for PFS, including a common currency.
