Postharvest Technology and Management (Asia)
To make sure fresh food stays at optimal quality from the time of harvest to the customer's plate is a challenging task. This program is designed to equip participants with essential knowledge and skills to effectively manage postharvest processes, ensuring food quality and safety from the farm to the consumer. Through engaging lectures, hands-on workshops, and living cases, you'll learn about the latest advancements in postharvest technology and best practices for minimising losses and maximising the value of agricultural products. This course focuses on innovative technologies and methods that enhance the handling, storage, and processing of harvested crops, ultimately reducing waste and improving nutritional quality.
Target audience
This course is designed for professionals across the agriculture, food supply, and quality assurance & surveying sectors (especially from Asian countries). It's your ticket to becoming an expert in the subtleties of making sure that fresh produce stays at optimal quality from the time of harvest to the customer's plate.
This programme is especially suited if you are a technical professional and play a key role in ensuring the quality, safety, and marketability of fruit and vegetables. Whether you're involved in research, postharvest technology, extension activities, or quality assurance, our programme will equip you with the latest knowledge and techniques to excel in your field.
Learning outcomes
After successful completion of this programme, you will be able to:
- Gain in-depth knowledge of the physiological mechanisms of fresh products, enhancing professional expertise and skills to extend product shelf life.
- Understand the general principles of post-harvest management and its importance, identify key factors affecting the quality and loss of fruits and vegetables, and develop effective strategies to enhance product quality and food safety.
- Apply advanced technologies for the storage, handling, and management of crops, and create strategies throughout the supply chain to reduce losses of fresh products and optimize internal preservation management processes.
- Collaborate to develop innovative solutions that promote sustainable development, leveraging localised solutions to create tailored post-harvest preservation strategies.
Programme
This programme has a focus on advanced techniques, providing hands-on-experiments, and the chance to network with industry peers and experts. The programme includes a field trip. You will gain in-depth knowledge and establish yourself as an expert in the field of:
- Where and why food loss and waste occurs and how to design interventions;
- Postharvest physiology, ripening and deterioration processes;
- Important factors for measurement, evaluation and modeling of product quality and loss;
- Current technologies for storage, transport, packaging and handling of perishables.
As part of the course, you will work in groups on hands-on experiments guided by experts from Wageningen University & Research.
You can combine this course with our upfront Refrigerated Transport Technology Asia course on March 24-25, 2025.
