Search tip: Nexis Uni for news articles

At WUR many people only search for scientific literature but it can also be useful to search for other types of sources, for example, newspaper articles. WUR Library holds a subscription to Nexis Uni, a database you can use to search for newspapers.

Nexis Uni

Nexis Uni is a database with more than 15,000 news, legal and business sources. You have access to the full text of the different sources. But, you must be logged in through the Library website.

You will have access to:

  • Both national and international newspapers  Volkskrant, NRC Handelsblad, Telegraaf, The Times, the New York Times, Le Monde (amongst others)
  • Regional newspapers
  • Magazines: Economist, Fortune, Opzij, Vrij Nederland, Groene Amsterdammer (amongst others)
  • WebNews and Blogs (URL to the source)
  • Television and radio broadcast (speech to text transcript and URL to video if still available).

Besides the news, you also have access to business information, financial information, legal information and intellectual Property Information.

Create an account

If you create an account you have access to more functionalities. You can save your searches and your filters, create alerts or annotate documents.

Search

You can search in 'All Nexis Uni' or use the 'Guided Search'. You can use the filter function to narrow your search (timeline, language, publication type, subject, industry and more).

Type your search:

  • Use natural language. The algorithm of Nexis Uni will try to provide you with relevant articles related to the keywords you typed.
  • Create a query with Boolean operators to make a systematic search. You can use the Boolean operators AND, OR, AND NOT, double quotations marks for phrase searching and the wildcard * to search for word variations. Check the help for more advanced information on the operators and connectors you can use.

Results

Use the 'Group Duplicates' function to group all versions of the same news article.

If you have already read the document, a small pair of glasses will appear above the preview buttons. This will help you to keep track of what you have already read.
