Student testimonial

Student Darius Reznek - MSc Landscape Architecture and Planning

The atelier is one of the more intensive and at the same time rewarding processes you encounter during the master’s study. Expanded over two periods and bringing together, students, teachers and external tutors with a wide variety of expertizes, it makes for a unique platform which combines university knowledge with real-life experiences and demands.

The atelier draws upon all your previously acquired knowledge.

The assignment was envisioning futures for two sustainable energy islands in the Dutch delta region; the islands of Goeree-Overflakkee and Schouwen-Duiveland. In different phases we focused on understanding the islands, identifying their potentials and limitations with regards to renewable energy and drawing up sustainable energy visions.

The last phase was centered around individual designs of different areas of the vision and I focused on developing a sustainable strategy for residential development, based on recycling farmyards and heat cascade systems.

The atelier draws upon all your previously acquired knowledge, as well as the ability to incorporate issues put forth by commissioners, and challenges your ability to function within an interdisciplinary team. The coaching of each group by communication experts, allowed for a better understanding of team functions as well as your individual role within the team. Together with the international excursion these made the atelier unique.

As a whole the experience was demanding but highly rewarding, and you get a real sense of achievement both as part of team as well as individually. In our case the end result was published in book form; which makes for a rewarding output of the weeks of hard work.
