Sugars and lipogenesis
To provide a literature overview on the effects of sugars (in particular fructose) on lipogenesis, and to provide insight in the probability of a causal role of increased fructose consumption in the current obesity epidemic.
Background: Consumption of sugars has been increased in the Western world over the last few decades. Simultaneously, the prevalence of obesity has also markedly increased. A causal relationship between these two observations is frequently suggested, supported by the effects of sugars (in particular fructose) on lipogenesis. However, controversy on this subject still exists.
Aim: To provide a literature overview on the effects of sugars (in particular fructose) on lipogenesis, and to provide insight in the probability of a causal role of increased fructose consumption in the current obesity epidemic.
