The implementation of Nature management plans for Natura 2000 sites
The most recent national nature conservation act includes the obligation to formulate management plans for areas that are designated as Nature 2000 site following the European Birds and Habitats directive.
This implies that all responsible governmental organisations (mainly provinces and Rijkswaterstaat) have to make plans in which the nature conservation goals are described together with the necessary management measures that are necessary to reach these goals. Besides this these management plans have to give clearness about the consequences for other activities in and around the Natura 2000 sites.
This new obligation raises a lot of question about the content and role of these plans, but also about the processes that need to be start to formulate these plans. Who should be involved? How should they be involved? What expectation do different actors have about the plans? What kind of knowledge is required to formulate the plans?
In order to facilitate the formulation of Nature management plans and to evaluate the whole process, Wageningen University started a research project in close cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food quality (LNV). Students that want to do a thesis or an internship are very welcome to participate in this research project. The thesis will be supervised by researchers from different chair groups (besides the Land Use Planning Group, people from the Communication Science Group, the Forest and Nature Conservation Policy Group, and the Law and Governance Group are participating). This project offers students the possibility to do their thesis in cooperation with students from an another study.
