The role of the nicotinamide nucleotide transhydrogenase (Nnt) gene in metabolic complications
Integrate results from research papers to create an overview about one or more questions related to this topic.
Background: The Nnt protein plays a crucial role in removing reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the mitochondria of cells. ROS are highly reactive molecules that –when present in high levels– are strongly related to metabolic complications. A Nnt-mutation in mice has been linked to enhanced susceptibility to diet-induced obesity and impaired glucose homeostasis.
Questions: What is the precise role of the Nnt gene in energy metabolism? Is this role influenced by physiological status like overweight/obese, or insulin resistant versus healthy? Is this role influenced by nutritional status? Is this role the same in mice and man?
Aims: Integrate results from research papers to create an overview about one or more questions related to this topic (exact topic to be determined with supervisor).
