Tjakko Abee
Tjakko Abee is professor of Food Microbiology at Wageningen University. His research is focused on the (functional) genomics and eco-physiology of food-related micro-organisms, including food spoilage bacteria and food-borne pathogens such as Salmonella Typhimurium, Listeria monocytogenes and Bacillus cereus.
Main research areas include microbial ecology and physiology, stress response, biofilm formation, sporulation and germination, combining molecular and physiological approaches. He has acted as the (co) promoter of 23 doctors and is currently involved in 12 PhD projects that focus on various aspects of (spoilage) lactic acid bacteria and pathogen genetics, ecology, physiology, evolution and virulence. He is involved in TI Food and Nutrition participating as a principle scientist in projects on detection, modeling, biofilms and spores. He has acted in organizing committees for large international symposia such as Food Micro and LAB (Lactic acid bacteria), and he is a frequently invited speaker at conferences. He acts as a reviewer for a large number of peer-reviewed, high impact journals and is acting associated editor of Microbiology, a journal published by the Society for General Microbiology (UK). He has published over 185 papers in peer-reviewed journals.
