For my bachelor thesis in Biotechnology, I was about to choose which subject I wanted to cover. I preferred a topic in which research was done that could contribute to the treatment of human diseases. I contacted prof.dr.ir. Jan Kammenga and his way of guiding my review about cancer research and C. elegans got me right into the Department of Nematology. He introduced me to dr. Mark Sterken. Mark's enthusiasm knew no bounds and my choice was made, I would do my research at the Department of Nematology with Mark as my supervisor. And then the Corona crisis broke out ...…….
..……. Due to the Corona crisis, it was not possible to conduct research on C. elegans at the university. That is why I used existing data to perform analysis and data mining.
But this did not happen automatically. The available data were large and abstract, but the guidance, stimulating discussions and instructive input from my supervisor Mark and from other students from the Nematology department helped me a lot. Mark kept me on track in the maze of data mining. I recommend everyone to check Nematology when you are looking for a place to do your thesis. Even in times when Corona rules the world, the Department of Nematology is an inspiring and helpful haven.
