At the department of Nematology I did my Bachelor thesis as a final part of my Bachelor Plant Sciences. My subject was about a very interesting protein, a potential immunomodulatory therapeutic.
The protein originates from a parasitic helminth, but can’t be extracted from this organism in sufficient amounts for therapeutic uses. Therefore an alternative production platform was needed and my goal was to produce the protein in sufficient amounts in tobacco plants. Since I am very interested in the combination of plants and human health this was a really interesting project for me. During my thesis I learned different theoretical and practical skills, like reading and writing literature but also cloning, expressing and extracting proteins. And of course, not unimportant, working (relatively) independent. Despite some setbacks that caused me not to accomplish everything I wanted to, I did reached my main goal. Doing my thesis at the laboratory of Nematology was a nice experience; there was a nice atmosphere and I got a lot of support in the lab and with my writing. Although is was a very busy period for me, I enjoyed the work and I definitely would like to work at the department again.
