My name is Patrick van Zanen and I study biotechnology. For the laboratory of Nematology of Wageningen University & Research, I have worked during my BSc Thesis on a project involving a nematode protein called BmVAL-1.
The main aim of the project was to increase the understanding of the mechanisms of interaction of the BmVAL-1 protein with other proteins. Binding assays are a way to study interactions of proteins and will therefore be used in the project at the end. In this case it is interesting to use de-glycosylated BmVAL-1 proteins for the binding assay as well, which means that genetic modification has to be applied to produce this protein. This project may ultimately be used for the development of a therapeutic application involving immunomodulation. My stay at the laboratory of Nematology was very pleasant thanks to the people I met there. They were not only able to help me with my thesis, but also enjoyed taking part on social activities with each other. Even though my stay at the laboratory of Nematology was somewhat longer than anticipated, it benefitted my knowledge about both theoretical and practical laboratory skills.
