Student testimonial

Ava Evans: I learned more than I could have hoped for and gained confidence in my scientific skills.

In September 2024 I started my MSc thesis project in the Laboratory of Nematology (NEMA). I am a Plant Biotechnology MSc student specialising in Plants for Human & Animal Health, and NEMA allowed me to work in a field I find particularly fascinating- using plants to produce something beneficial for humans and animals.

My project focused on glycoengineering Nicotiana benthamiana using CRISPR-ErCas12a, to produce a vaccine against parasitic worms. I carried out my thesis project in collaboration with the company Hudson River Biotechnology, located in Wageningen, where I gained a lot of bioinformatic and wet lab experience, along with an understanding into the biotechnology industry. I learned more than I could have hoped for and gained confidence in my scientific skills. NEMA supported me throughout the project, and my supervisors were always willing and helpful and very friendly.

I really enjoyed the collaborative and fun atmosphere at NEMA and the social events that they organised. I would recommend this chair group to anyone!
