Ivana Meeuwisz: I received a lot of helpful supervision and could ask questions anytime
When deciding on a chair group to do my thesis, nematology was the first chair group that came to mind. I followed the courses Ecophysiology and Host parasite interactions. Both these courses really spiked my interest in nematology! I also gained more interest in the chair group on the thesis market.
The initial plan for my thesis was to test the effect of several pathogens on different Brassica oleracea and Allium fistulosum species. However, due to time constraints, I decided to focus solely on Brassica oleracea.
I had a very good experience during the project. I mostly enjoyed the practical work in both the lab and greenhouse. I learned some new things about the cultivation of fungi as well as their effects on plants.Originally I focused mainly on differences in leaf browning, but soon my focus shifted more towards shoot length and growth rate.
I also liked to be able to collect my own data and have some freedom in how to proceed with this. Collecting data myself gave me the opportunity to refresh my knowledge in statistics. I received a lot of helpful supervision and could ask questions anytime. This was really useful during the project, especially since it was my first time working mostly independently.
Overall, I had a good experience during my thesis, I acquired some new knowledge on data collection and was able to improve on my scientific writing skills.
