Marjam Saleh: What I appreciated most was the freedom to shape the project around my interests

I did my research practice at the Laboratory of Nematology at Wageningen University, and it was both a fun and valuable experience. My project focused on a potato cyst nematode (PCN), a pest that causes major damage in potato crops. The main goal was to better understand host-pathogen interactions using bioinformatics tools.

It was my first time working on such a big bioinformatics project, and when I told my supervisor I wanted to learn more, he was really open and supportive. I always felt comfortable asking questions. Anytime I needed help, someone was happy to take the time to explain things. That openness and willingness to help really stood out to me. What I appreciated most was the freedom to shape the project around my interests. I got to focus on specific bioinformatics topics that I want to apply in my future career. The whole team created a space where curiosity and learning were encouraged, and that made a big difference. Although I found bioinformatics quite challenging at first, I ended up really enjoying it. A big part of that was thanks to my supervisors, who were patient, passionate, and great at teaching it.

Aside from all the learning, the department was just a great place to be. One of the highlights was the annual Christmas lunch that lasted over 10 hours! I even won second place in the dessert competition šŸ˜„. It says a lot about how welcoming and inclusive the department is for students.

I’m really grateful for the opportunity to be part of such a supportive and inspiring team.
