The protein transition in practice: 4 routes for the public sector

How will the WUR experts do this?

From 12 to 14 October, 2022, the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) is organizing a series of side events around the FAO Science and Innovation Forum. Here, Wageningen University & Research is hosting an online session (13 October) about the protein transition with the theme "Protein Transition: from Pain Points to Perspective”.

In presentations and panel discussions with external experts, several WUR experts will outline perspectives around 4 topics:

• Future scenarios for farmers: how to bring technology innovation to the farm?
• Strategies to influence consumer behavior for a more plant-based diet
• Less reliance on soy imports: alternatives for animal feed, based on insects, algae and waste streams
• Animals as recyclers: towards a circular food system

Why is WUR organizing this session?

Policy makers are increasingly aware of the need for action in the protein transition. Yet the complexity of this challenge which touches on climate change, nitrogen cycles, and loss of biodiversity, makes it difficult to navigate. A consumption shift from animal to plant-based and alternative protein sources is a part of the solution. Rethinking the way animal sourced foods are produced is equally important. Wageningen University & Research has been researching the protein transition for years and believes it is important that this knowledge is widely applied in practice. That is why we are committed to sharing our knowledge with the broad set of stakeholders needed to make the transition happen in practice.
