Research Assistant Passive Fisheries
Your job
Do you enjoy variety in your work and the prospect of regularly working at sea? Do you want to contribute to fisheries research and enjoy collaborating with others? If so, Wageningen Marine Research has an exciting vacancy for an HBO-level Researcher!
Responsibilities:- Conduct fisheries research and contribute to innovation at the HBO level.
- Actively participate in the development and execution of (sub)projects in fisheries research, following established protocols.
- Focus on research related to passive fishing methods, including sea-based research in experimental and commercial fisheries.
- Record data using software employed by WMR and process it accurately.
- Perform independent quality control of data, identify deviations, and report them to researchers.
- Provide instructions and explanations to colleagues and fishers about the required protocols.
- Organize observer trips on fishing vessels, some of which you will undertake yourself.
- Participate in sea-based research, occasionally acting as a trip leader.
- Work independently and as part of a team.
- Report to researchers and contribute to scientific publications, reports, and protocols.
Your qualities
- Enthusiastic and ambitious candidate with a relevant higher vocational education in marine biology, ecology, or coastal and marine management.
- Interest in fisheries research and knowledge of relevant marine species.
- Enjoy collaborating with fishers and have relevant experience in this field.
- Experience conducting sea-based research and following complex protocols accurately.
- Seaworthy and willing to spend several weeks a year at sea.
- Capable of performing preliminary processing of collected data and reporting in writing.
- Strong communicator, capable of working independently and in a team.
- Accurate, practical, proactive, and solution-oriented approach to work.
- Flexible working hours (e.g., for fisheries meetings or sea trips) and willingness to be available outside office hours for fishers.
- Possession of a valid Category B driving license and a valid STCW Basic Safety Certificate.
- Basic-level English communication skills (C1 level). If you don’t meet this level yet, we offer support through our language center, Wageningen in’to Language.
- Non-native speakers must have sufficient proficiency in Dutch to communicate effectively with fishers in Dutch.
