Your job

Do you want to contribute to animal welfare in sustainable livestock farming?

We are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced researcher who is eager to contribute to the welfare of pigs in sustainable livestock systems through innovative research. Working in diverse (often international) project teams and in collaboration with a broad range of stakeholders, you will help develop practical solutions with real impact.

As a researcher, your tasks and responsibilities include:

  • (Contributing to) the development of research proposals and project plans;
  • Designing and conducting experiments, collecting and analysing data, and formulating conclusions and recommendations;
  • Leading a project team and overseeing the practical execution of projects;
  • Writing scientific reports and publications;
  • Presenting results to clients and stakeholders and/or at (inter)national conferences.
Your Team
Animal health and welfare is one of the five research departments of Wageningen Livestock Research (WLR). Our team of around 45 highly motivated project leaders, researchers, research assistants, and PhD candidates is known for its expertise in animal welfare and behaviour, animal health, and resilience.
We focus on the health and welfare of animals within the broader context of making livestock farming more sustainable. Our research centres on the needs of cattle, pigs, poultry, small ruminants, and fish, and our goal is to generate knowledge that supports both animal dignity and economic viability. We use innovative technologies such as sensor technology, big data analytics, AI, and microbiomics. Most of our research projects are multidisciplinary in nature.

Your qualities

You are a results-oriented and enthusiastic researcher or project leader with a strong interest in animal welfare and sustainable livestock farming. You are skilled in solving (scientific) problems in collaboration with colleagues and stakeholders. You are proactive, solution-focused, socially aware, and enjoy working in a goal-oriented way.

You also bring:

  • Expertise in pig husbandry and a strong affinity with animal welfare;
  • Good organisational skills and experience with project management;
  • The ability to work within diverse scientific and multidisciplinary teams;
  • A scientific track record with relevant publications;
  • Proficiency in both Dutch and English.
In our international working environment, English is increasingly used. For this position, a C1 level of English is required. If you do not yet meet this level, we will of course support you, and you can take courses through our language centre, Wageningen in’to Language.
