Suzan Veneman Sextet
Jazz trumpeter Suzan Veneman is quickly making a name for herself on the jazz circuit, capturing audiences with an adventurous and soulful sound. After completing her studies in the US, she is successful as a musician and promising composer/arranger. At home in many genres of modern music, she collaborates with a wide range of bands, including the Beets Meutgeert New Jazz Orchestra, the Millennium Jazz Orchestra, Zack Lober's NO FILL3R, Sprank, the Patrieck Bonnet Quintet and her own ambitious projects 'Zinder' and the Suzan Veneman Sextet.
Previously, she was a finalist at the Prinses Christina Concours (NL, 2010) and participated in the exclusive Jazz Rising Stars Program in Ravinia IL, (US, 2013) led by former jazz giant David Baker. Suzan also excelled as a skilled composer and arranger, and was a finalist at the ASMAC Big Band composer and arranger competition in LA (US, 2014) and prize winner Jazz Comp Graz Big Band Composers Competition in Austria in 2021. She was invited as a guest composer with NDR big band in Hamburg, as part of their 'Arrangement Stage' in 2021 and was chosen as 1 of 10 composers to present their new work during 'Week of Jazz' in 2022.
Suzan formed her band after an invitation to play at the Jazz to Guest festival in Zuidhorn, Groningen in 2019. This has become one of her most important musical projects. It showcases her personal and musical development. And you will find that her music is deeply rooted in traditional jazz, but also contains a high dose of soul and influences from funk and fusion. Her strong, compelling melodies are supported by a dynamic rhythm section, which leaves plenty of room for each band member's own musical interpretation.
The band recorded music during the pandemic for their album 'Migrations of the Mind' (2021). On the album, Suzan explores the stages of grief in a three-part suite, capturing the emotions she went through after being diagnosed with MS. It is a powerful journey that ends in an energetic finale, with newfound acceptance and strength.
