The Darwinian statement: survival of the fittest highlights the importance of muscle function for health preservation. Silvie Timmers is a human muscle physiologist interested in preserving and promoting muscle health and preventing functional decline in which she departs from a mitochondrial and metabolic perspective. Her research agenda focuses on i) studying the functional properties of skeletal muscle and understanding the basis of muscle fatigue in different physiological and pathophysiological states, ii) understanding the role of the mitochondrial energy metabolism in preserving muscle health and function and iii) investigating the molecular and physiological adaptation of skeletal muscle to nutritional, nutraceutical and pharmacological interventions. Ultimately, her goal is to find strategies and targets to optimize muscle function in health and diseased states and contribute to a better physical performance and quality of life.
