The KNAW has awarded the yearly Academy Ecology Funds that support young scientists to perform ecological fieldwork that aims to answer fundamental scientific questions.

Lisa van Sluijs has received this grant to sample bacterivorous nematode populations in autumn and identify the nematode pathogens that are present within these populations. By identifying nematode and pathogen diversity in the wild populations, she will gain insight into the role of host biodiversity in the pathogen presence. Lower host biodiversity is often predicted to result in higher pathogen presence and using bacterivorous nematode populations she will observe and test this hypothesis in microbial populations.
