From May 26th to May 28th the virtual installment of the European Society of Nematologists conference took place. The conference was specifically aimed at nematologists in the early stages of their careers (PhD and Postdoc), to support them in establishing and extending their scientific network. In the absence of the regular live meetings, the conference was hosted on Gather Town, a platform that allows all participants to walk around in a virtual conference venue with their own avatar.

The subjects in the scientific program of the conference purposely included all aspects of nematology, ranging from nematode genomes to multitrophic interactions involving nematodes in complex ecosystems. A total of 71 presentations were given, divided over multiple plenary and parallel sessions by speakers from over twenty different universities and institutes.

Several activities were organized in addition to the scientific program as well. For example, the participants could learn new skills in various workshops, ranging from dealing with issues during a PhD or postdoc position, to statistical analyses for nematologists, and writing an outstanding proposal. In addition, each conference day was concluded with a social activity, such as a nematology themed quiz, a holiday picture competition and a nematode cocktail contest.

The conference, organized by the European Society of Nematologists, takes place biannually and was supposed to be held in 2020. However, due to COVID-19 the conference was postponed to 2021, with the next conference being in 2022. If COVID measurements will allow so, this will take place again on location in Antibes, France.
