Wageningen University & Research appoints Josephine van Zeben Chair of the LAW Group

The Executive Board has appointed dr. Josephine van Zeben BA (Hons), LLB, LLM, LLM (Harvard), MA (Oxon) as Chair of the LAW group at Wageningen University & Research. Her appointment will commence on 1 October 2019.

Professor dr. J.A.W. (Josephine) van Zeben (Leiden, 1984) obtained her BA in Social Sciences at University College Utrecht (Utrecht University), completing part of her degree at the University of Bologna. She continued her studies at the University of Edinburgh, where she graduated with an LLB in Scots Law, and the University of Amsterdam, for an LLM in European Private Law. In 2012, she completed her PhD cum laude at the University of Amsterdam under the auspices of the Amsterdam Centre for Law and Economics and the Amsterdam Centre for Environmental Law and Sustainability. During 2010-11, she was a Hauser Scholar at New York University School of Law. Van Zeben is also a graduate from Harvard Law School (LLM, 2014) and holds an MA degree from the University of Oxford (by decree).

Between 2012 and 2014, van Zeben worked for the Amsterdam Centre for European Law & Governance (University of Amsterdam) and as a postdoctoral researcher at the Ostrom Workshop at Indiana University (United States). She has also been a lecturer at the ETH Zürich – teaching Environmental Regulation: Law and Policy – since 2012. Since 2014, she has been a Fellow in public and EU law at Worcester College, University of Oxford. She has held visiting positions at, among others, Notre Dame University (United States) and La Trobe University (Australia).

Prof. van Zeben is part of the editorial board of several academic journals, including Transnational Environmental Law, the Croatian Yearbook of European Law and Policy, and Istituzioni del Federalismo, and board member of several associations, such as the Society for Environmental Law and Economics and the International Environmental Law Interest Group of the European Society of International Law.

As chair of the LAW group at Wageningen University & Research, Prof. van Zeben’s research focusses on the regulation of environmental issues by public and private actors across jurisdictions. Her international research pays particular attention to polycentric governance as well as developments related to the European Union. Van Zeben’s research, and the combined expertise of the members of the Chair group, compliments Wageningen University & Research’s work on important social and environmental questions.
