Designing a waste water treatment installations as an urban park on Strijp S in Eindhoven - Interdisciplinary MSc thesis project

Wageningen UR draagt door een interdisciplinaire samenwerking milieutechnologie en landschapsarchitectuur bij aan het werk van De Dommel bij de concrete casus Strijp S.

This thesis project investigates possibilities to plan and design a biobased waste water treatment facility as incorporated green space in the urban environment. New technologies based on natural processes of plants make it possible to turn conventional waste water treatments into ‘green’ waste water treatments, which are no longer highly engineered facilities but are rather associated with botanical gardens.

Here questions arise like: how can such a new ‘green’ waste water treatment facility be linked with the network of green urban spaces? Can such a ‘green’ waste water facility be planned and designed as public space? What is the most suitable location of such a new facility within a city? Or how should it be linked systemically and based on design to fit in the existing urban environment? This project relates urban metabolism, specifically urban waste water management, with green urban planning and design in order to find synergies and innovative solutions for sustainable cities.

The specific case for this project is Eindhoven, where the water board ‘De Dommel’ is interested in developing such a ‘green’ waste water treatment as an alternative to conventional, highly engineered solutions. We are looking for a LAR MSc student who would like to join the team, in which besides the stakeholders from De Dommel and Eindhoven also a MSc student from the Environmental Technology Group (ETE) is involved. Both MSc thesis projects (LAR and ETE) start in September 2015.
