In March of this year, a thematic issue entitled “Managing ecosystem services and natural capital – trade-offs, synergies and challenges” was published in the International Journal of Biodiversity Science, Ecosystem Services & Management, of which Dolf de Groot is editor-in-Chief.

The issue, which was edited by Alexander van Oudenhoven and Nicola Zaccarelli, contains contributions from participants of the 3d International Conference of the Ecosystem Services Partnership. The conference took place in Salzau and Kiel (Germany) and was held between June 7th and June 11th 2010.

International Journal of Biodiversity Science, Ecosystem Services & ManagementFindings and presentations of the conference’s workshop on ‘Adaptive management of ecosystem services’, have been bundled in the thematic issue, which mainly deals with how the ecosystem services approach can be better applied in adaptive land use management and spatial planning. Some questions that were touched upon during this workshop included ‘Which supporting tools have to be developed to enhance the applicability of the ecosystem services approach in adaptive management?’ and ‘How can the ecosystem services approach be implemented in management strategies and institutions?’ The issue’s editorial can be found here; for the full list of contributing papers click here.

The Ecosystem Services Partnership has been on the move since 2010. The 4th ESP conference, held in Wageningen, October 2011, was a great success and we are now looking forward to the 5th conference, which will be held in Portland, Oregon late July 2012.
