Msc research project: Insects and aquatic bugs in Ladakh.

We are urgently seeking students who will be going to the highest mountains on Earth to assess the importance of these areas for bird migration and nature conservation.

The Resource Ecology Group has been working the last 12 years in the Trans-Himalayan area of Ladakh. This area of India lies between the Himalayas and Tibet (China). Its capital city is Leh, situated at about 3400 m above sea level and that is about as low as you can get here.

Every year migrant birds trek over the Himalayas, of which the lowest mountain passes are above 5000 m above sea level. At altitudes between about 4400 and 4800 m the best wetlands can be found for migratory birds, and we want to know what sort of insects, bugs and small aquatic life can be found there, and at which times of the year.

We are thus urgently seeking students (minimally two for safety and fun; there will also be a Ladakhi student for the language and finding the ways) who will be going to the highest mountains on Earth to assess the importance of these areas for bird migration and nature conservation. We want you to go there by the end of April 2013; of course you must be fit because you have to walk and camp.
