Technology shapes society, including the ways in which we understand and deal with our environment, animals, food and health. The goal of my research is to contribute to the shaping of that technology by means of the enhancement of ethical reflection on its anticipated impacts on human (social) life with stakeholders who are involved in making it by means of research or development, or who are its potential users. The background understanding of ethics that I use is broad: I primarily contribute to making the values and interests of stakeholders explicit and facilitate their reflection and dialogue on them. The goal is to realize more responsibe choices, which are based on a reflective trade-off of the values and interests that are at stake.
Main fields of interest are: responsible research and innovation, internet of things in farming, ethics of big data, value-sensitive design, ethics of genomics in diagnostics and screening (newborn screening), the role of moral imagination and dialogue in ethical reflection.
Next to my research I am associate editor of the Journal of Responsible Innovation and member of the commission ethical and societal aspects of genetic modification of Cogem, an advisory organization for the Dutch government.
