On the occasion of the celebrations marking 750 years since Wageningen was granted city rights, Arnold van Vliet was presented with the Gilded Wageningen Honorary Silver Medal by Mayor Geert van Rumund yesterday. The Gilded Wageningen Honorary Silver Medal is a distinction exclusive to Wageningen that functions as a token of thanks and honour for Wageningen citizens and people from outside Wageningen who have distinguished themselves through particular efforts for the community in one area or another.

Arnold van Vliet, who returned from holiday especially for the occasion, received the distinction – a piece of silver jewellery with a golden edge in the form of the wheel appearing in the crest of Wageningen, to be worn as a pendant (with a chain), a brooch and/or a lapel pin – for 'making essential, structural contributions over a lengthy period of time to a Wageningen-based institution of social importance, also benefiting the community of Wageningen itself.' Generally speaking, another – simpler – distinction precedes the award of the Gilded Wageningen Honorary Silver Medal, but the municipal authority made an exception for Arnold van Vliet. During the presentation, the mayor referred to Arnold's work on such projects as the Nature Calendar and the Allergy Radar.

Besides Arnold van Vliet, the Gilded Wageningen Honorary Silver Medal was also presented to Ted Meines – board member of the National Committee Commemoration Capitulations 1945 Wageningen (NCHC) and the driving force behind the annual procession on 5 May for many years, and Stichting Ons Pardon (‘Our Pardon Foundation’) on Wednesday afternoon.
