Low fat-high carbohydrate diets, low carb- high fat diets, ketogenic diets. An array of dietary strategies is advocated to support endurance exercise performance. Carbohydrates and fat are recognized as the main substrates for powering prolonged endurance exercise.

Although carbohydrates are widely accepted as fuel for skeletal muscle to promote exercise performance, recent investigations introduced a new concept of exercising with low carbohydrate availability aimed to optimize training adaptation (“train low – compete high”). This presentation will address the What, When and Why questions of dietary strategies to maximize endurance sport performance.
