SG Activity - Creativity in Groups

Although the myth of the ‘lone genius’ suggests that creative ideas are generated in social isolation, in fact much creative work is done in groups. This is true in, for example, music, film, art, industry, and science.

What is needed to make groups creative? Does this simply depend on the creativity of the group members, and what is the role of diversity, or of newcomers? How do factors such as leadership, time pressure, or conflict affect group creativity? Professor Bernard Nijstad will address these questions, and the implications of the answers for collaboration in science.

Prof. dr. Bernard Nijstad

Bernard Nijstad is a Full Professor in ‘Decision making and organizational behaviour in business and economics’ at the Faculty of Economics and Business of the University of Groningen. In 2000 he received his PhD (cum laude). The topic of the thesis was performance of brainstorming groups, which created an interest in both creativity and in group dynamics and group performance. Working at the University of Amsterdam, in 2004 he received an NWO VIDI grant to study individual and group indecision. In 2016 he received an NWO VICI grant to examine creativity and innovation in organizations.
