Development of Resource use efficient chains

Plants are directly or indirectly the major source of compounds for biobased products. To meet the demands of the 21st century agriculture needs to deliver enough food, feed, chemicals, materials and energy (including biofuels). This together with the increasing population, expected to reach 9 billion people by 2050, makes clear that a more efficient use of the agriculture resources is essential, we need to produce 2 times more with 2 times less.

The aim of this proposal is to develop resource use efficient production chains. This will comprise the development of i) new varieties with improved biomass quality for different biorefinery chains, of crops that are efficient in the use of natural resources and resilient to climate chains; ii) better extraction and conversion methods, which require less energy and chemicals; iii) ensure the recycling of nutrients and use of manure.
