EndLESS - Reduction of airborne endotoxins in animal production, to improve human and animal health

To develop interventions to reduce the production, exposure and impact of endotoxins at the source (here animal husbandry) and in the environment. Strategies will be developed to support the implementation of successful interventions. This integral approach will result in improved health of both humans and animals

Human health can be affected by endotoxin present in farm animal faeces, excreta and manure. Current research focusses on effects of endotoxin on animal health and on reducing of endotoxin production, concentration and emission in animal production systems. Research areas concern interactions of microbiome and feed, influencing manure and excreta quality and technical designs to reduce airborne endotoxin. Promising interventions are evaluated on socio-economic feasibility and consumer acceptance, Intervention will lead to reduction in production of endotoxins in animal husbandry, thereby improving human and animal health.
