Improving herring larvae surveys indices (HERLARS)

Recruitment is the main driver of fish stock dynamics. It is also one of the more difficult parameters in biology to get a good grip on. Within the North Sea, two surveys are on-going that sample herring larvae and can be used to generate a proxy of recruitment.

Recruitment is the main driver of fish stock dynamics. It is also one of the more difficult parameters in biology to get a good grip on. Within the North Sea, two surveys are on-going that sample herring larvae and can be used to generate a proxy of recruitment. Improvements to the way the data that is collected is used for assessment purposes is however necessary. We propose a combination of larval distribution modelling, using formerly unused data in existing time-series to improve accuracy and simulation modelling to test if the changes have a positive effect on the efficacy of fisheries management
