Insects are important in the circular economy as insects can turn low-grade biomass into high quality feed ingredients. However many research questions remain to use to opportunities of insects as food and feed and some regulatory issues for introduction of these products to the market have to be solved. In the project knowledge will be developed on: functional properties of insect nutrients for animal nutrition and safety issues of insects for human food. This project will result in innovative feeding concepts of insect products as feed and also input for risk assessments.
Insect growers can use the developed knowledge to deliver their products to the new market, to inform (new) customers, and to meet the legislation aspects. Feed companies can use the results to develop new feeding concepts and to inform their customers. Researchers can use the developed knowledge to develop new technologies and analytical methods for safety and functional properties.
