Chongqing is one of the four autonomous metropolitans in China in addition to Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin. Its 29 million population makes it the most populated municipality in China. It is located in the Southwest of China, 4 hours traveling time to another metropolitan Chengdu with another population of 14 million. These markets are developing rapidly to catch up the eastern coastal regions of China.
The newly opened rail route from Rotterdam to Chongqing is currently mainly transporting goods from IT, electronics and mechanical equipment. In order to export agrifood products to China via the rail route, a new protocol and phyto sanitary agreement are needed. Furthermore, the route will pass extremely hot regions in the summers and extremely cold regions in the winter. Specific logistic innovation and knowledge needs to be developed to ensure agrifood shipment along this new route.
