Kansen voor morgen 5: Marketing of Dates

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) is the second largest producer of dates in the world. Annually more than 1 million tons of dates are produced. The Netherlands currently imports around 3,000 tons from Saudi Arabia. The date sector is one of national pride and therefore a large political involvement is present.

The Saudi date sector faces several challenges, such as pests (red palm weevil), cultivation management (irrigation) and marketing (lack of grading and sorting).The overall objective of this project is to analyze the date value chain and to identify viable opportunities and engage with a variety of stakeholders to sustain and scale-up the date sector in the KSA. In order to drive export growth, this analysis will focus on value chain governance including the possibilities for standards such certification and local quality standards.
