Project

Kleine Bijenkastkever

This project aims to increase the knowledge of the dispersal biology and ecology of the small hive beetle. This honey bee parasite has recently been introduced into Europe and poses a risk to Dutch beekeeping and pollination services. The small hive beetle is an excellent flyer, however little is known about the flight activity. For instance there are only anecdotal reports of the distance it can cover and under which conditions. We will perform two experiments to investigate flight activity and performance of the small hive beetle. This knowledge will contribute to our understanding of the dispersal of this species, which can be used for improving contingency strategies and policies.
