Magnificent is an industry driven R&D and innovation project and aims to enlarge the current market applications for high-value microalgae ingredients which will lead to new business opportunities, industrialize the technology and provide the knowledge and experience required to enter the medium- low value market within 5-10 years. The overall objective of the project is to develop and validate a sustainable and economically feasible new value chain based on cultivation and processing of microalgae with the aim to transform microalgae raw material into valuable ingredients for food, aquatic feed and cosmetics applications.
To enable this, the project will optimise both upstream (adaptation and selection of industrial / robust algae strains, improvement of growing conditions and target product concentration) and downstream (separation, purification) processing steps in order to achieve the overall aim to maximise the production of compounds of interest. Development and validation of new ingredients and product formulations will be done targeting food, aqua feed, and the cosmetics sectors. Technologies will be integrated and validated. The exploitation and implementation of this work will be supported by chain evaluation, market assessment, socio-economic impact assessment and LCA. Specific attention will be paid to the requirements of the existing EU regulatory framework. Within the project, WFBR will focus on optimization of product formation via (non-GMO) strain improvement.
