The existing system to monitor the development of Integraal Duurzame Stallen (Integrally Sustainable Barns a Dutch policy category) is being expandend to a system that can monitor the progress of the sustainable development of the Dutch animal production sectors. The new monitoring system will be based on a shared future vision formulated under the title 15 ambitions for a sustainable animal husbandry (from the Dutch 15 ambities voor een duurzame veehouderij),. A Dutch governance network within and around the agro-sector (i.e. The Uitvoeringsagenda Duurzame Veehouderij - UDV) agreed on these ambitions in april 2013.
Subsequently, in 2016, the Integrally Sustainable Barns monitoring system will be, as usually, applied and then expanded to a new monitoring system which not only audit (1) stables, but also monitor (2) a selection of initiatives in the primary sector and specific market chains (3) including also programmatically implemented management measures. A broader selection is foreseen for the next years. The system to be developed has two main goals:
- To fulfil the existing need of the Dutch Parliament for a monitoring system to evaluate the sustainable development of animal husbandry
- To enable measuring (through a set of indicators) to what extend specific initiatives in the primary sectors and market chains that exceed legal requirements contribute to the sustainable development of Dutch animal husbandry towards the 15 ambitions.
The second result enables the UDV to initiate a dialogue with sectors and chains regarding the progress made and to determine the domains where further action might be needed for achieving the sustainability ambitions.
