There is a growing insight that nature is much more dynamic and unpredictable than expected. This is for instance illustrated by the recent experiences with climate change.
Ecosystems will change caused by climate change, the frequency of disturbances and extreme weather events will increase and the species composition will become less predictable. Another recent insight is that ecosystems need a certain level of dynamics to maintain their adaptive capacity. The project has the following objectives. Develop insights to what extend size, connectivity and heterogeneity of nature areas and the surrounding landscape contribute to species diversity in metacommunities under different levels of dynamics. Develop recommendations for nature conservation management how to stimulate robust resilient ecosystems, that are able to cope with and recover from disturbances.
