Robert grew up in Dublin, Ireland, completing his BA in History at Trinity College Dublin in 2016. In 2018 he moved to the Netherlands to complete his MA History of Politics & Society at Utrecht University with his thesis entitled Cities of Industry and Vice: Economic Development, Neo-Institutional Theory and Path Dependence in Hong Kong and Macau, 1800-2000. His research interests include inequality and industrialization in East and Southeast Asia.

He is currently pursuing an Economic History PhD project at the Rural and Environmental History group, where he hopes to use long term historic and economic factors to understand the high levels of economic growth in Southeast Asia over the previous decades.

Robert will be supervised by Ewout Frankema, Pim de Zwart and Michiel de Haas.
