Caenorhabditis elegans is a tractable model species for studying stress pathways. Studies in C. elegans stress response have provided detailed insights into the genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying complex human diseases such as cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. In this review we discuss the different types of stress responses, the molecular mechanisms they involve and how they can be translated to human research and therapeutics.
