A decentralisation process has been underway in the Democratic Republic of Congo since 2006. Elections are planned at the levels of chiefdoms or sectors in the rural areas, and cities and communes in the urban areas.

In this context, Cordaid and its partner organisations in South Kivu and Eastern Province organised a writeshop in Bukavu in South Kivu in December 2009 for twenty participants from NGOs, chiefdoms and Civil Society Organisations to explore good governance practices.

The objective of the workshop was to extract the lessons from the most significant experiences gained in the area of promoting good governance, and to reflect on future action.

This publication (French, with English summary) describes six most promising interventions and seven strategies to promote good local governance currently practised, as well as recommendations to build upon those experiences by strategic interventions at both local and national level.
