This research is one of the scarce studies, exploring gender aspects of rural livelihoods and the effects of rural transformation process on gender relations in the transition economies, such as the Khorezm province of Uzbekistan; and investigating the reasons of why some households manage to have better benefits in the same context of transition than the others.

The livelihood approaches, utilized from a gender perspective, will guide this research. To produce rigorous and high quality findings, the longitudinal design will be employed and both qualitative and quantitative data will be collected and analyzed at the household level during three years.
