3D printing and biology

Jutta Wirth, molecular biologist, loves to use techniques to discover pattern in biological systems. Is there a uniform shape of an egg? Do eggs vary in shape across bird species ? What are the colours of bird eggs? How do bird eggs differ from dinosaur eggs?

She has started with NIOO and others a new bird egg project in the FabLab Wageningen with 3D printing. They calculated the surface of a bird egg, designed it in 3D and made 3D prints that are an exact copy of a real egg. By copying nature we can use this 3D technology in research as an elegant way to understand biological pattern and systems.
